October 29th, 2004 6:31 pm
Moore Speech Unlike Any of the Other Stump Speeches in W. Virginia This Year

By Tara Tuckwiller / The Charleston Gazette

FAIRMONT — When President George W. Bush’s supporters tried to drown out his Wednesday night speech by chanting “four more years,” filmmaker Michael Moore set off deafening cheers with one quip.

“Now, now. Let’s be nice to them,” the “Fahrenheit 9/11” director told the 4,000 people who packed into Fairmont State University’s gymnasium. “They’ve only got six more days left.”

Moore made West Virginia the 49th stop on his 60-city, 30-day “Slacker Uprising Tour.” It was unlike any of the other countless stump speeches West Virginians have sat through this year: Dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt, on a practically empty stage, Moore fired up Kerry supporters with comedy.

When hecklers tried to derail him by chanting the Hail Mary, Moore joined in for a rep, then paused.

“Hey, let me ask you a question?” he shouted to the protesters. “What would Jesus bomb?”

More deafening cheers.

Moore also drew laughs with his homemade commercials for Bush.

“One of John Kerry’s biggest supporters, Max Cleland, claims to have lost two legs and an arm in Vietnam,” began the voice-over of one ad, played on a big screen. “But he still has one arm. How did that happen? One word: Cowardice ... Is that the type of person you want hanging out with the president of the United States? We think not.”

Moore said that unlike Bush, he welcomes protesters. But he disagreed with the way they tried to drown out the families of soldiers that spoke on the stage before him.

“I watched how they were treated by [this] crowd,” he said. It reminded him, he said, of the Bush administration trying to cut soldiers’ combat pay and close veterans’ hospitals.

“You in West Virginia, you give a gift to the rest of the country, with so many of your sons and daughters in the military,” Moore said, asking the veterans in the crowd to stand and be recognized. “That gift should be respected.”

Moore spoke directly to Bush supporters: “If you’re thinking of voting for President Bush,” he said, “please, think about this: 3,000 people died under his watch. He was at the wheel. He refused to have a single meeting with his anti-terrorism czar until September of 2001.

“This man is completely clueless as to what the real terror is. I beg you, don’t vote for George W. Bush.”

Moore also spoke about health care and said his next film would be about that industry.

“The health care firms found out I was going to make this movie, and so they’ve been getting ready for me,” he said. “Pfizer pharmaceutical sent out a secret memo to their field offices warning about me. And thanks to some pissed-off employee sitting in a cubicle at Pfizer, she sent the secret memo to me over the Internet.”

He read from the memo amid laughter from the audience: “‘If you’re approached by a bearded, heavyset man wearing rumpled clothing and holding a microphone’ — oh, there’s the tip-off — ‘you may want to think twice before answering his questions. Word has it that Michael Moore is making a documentary about pharmaceutical companies. We’re not sure if he’s pro or con’ — right there you feel sorry for them, right? You know they’re in for the ass-whupping of a lifetime ... ‘If you are approached by Michael Moore, you must call’ — and they have a Michael Moore hotline set up.”

A heckler wanted the number. “I’m in enough trouble already,” Moore protested.

“Wimp,” the heckler responded.

“All right,” Moore acquiesced. “I’ll give you the number. But here’s what you gotta say when you call.” Moore scrunched his head into his shoulders and spoke in a scared, hushed voice: “He’s ... in... the ... building ...”

The crowd roared. One cell phone user called the number and got voicemail. Moore counted, “One, two, three ...” The crowd shouted, “He’s here!”

Before he makes his health care documentary, Moore said he’s going to spend Nov. 3 sleeping. Unless the Republicans try to overturn Kerry’s victory, he said: “Then, we’ll be calling for massive, nonviolent protests in the streets of cities across the nation.”

Leesha and I are moving to Elyria. Just for a couple of months until we can save up some money and move to El Paso. My uncle offered me a great job there and we can live rent free. Leesha was having some trouble with school and she is going to try and take some classes through mail to graduate. I hope all goes well with that.

We have 'til the end of the month to clean, pack, sell, take care of bills and such, and move. It's going to be a pain in the ass.
